Its nickname, "City of Sails," is due to the "thousand boats" that reside in its harbor. The metropolis spans an 11 km wide strait made of volcanic rock, making it a paradise for water enthusiasts. North of Auckland, the "Leigh Marine Reserve" offers abundant opportunities for all kinds of underwater activities.

Cultural attraction is the "Auckland Museum.".

As Australia`s unofficial backpacker capital, it magnetically attracts young travelers with its almost limitless range of leisure activities. The Great Barrier Reef is much more accessible from here than from central Queensland. The crystal-clear sea, palm-fringed islands, and sandbars are particularly appealing to divers and snorkelers. The two nearby islands, Green and Fitzroy Island, are very popular holiday destinations for this reason. The outer reef, a favorite among divers, is about 50 km away. In the immediate vicinity, there are untouched coastal areas and a mysterious wilderness of rainforests set against a towering mountain range in the background.

Located on the Cape York Peninsula is the northernmost city on the east coast of Australia: Cooktown. The name honors the explorer James Cook, who ran his ship Endeavour aground on a reef in the area in 1770. The city is characterized by many colonial buildings.
